It
was a day filled with potential with two boats positioned to challenge
the dominant Miss Budweiser. But as veteran fans know...hydroplane
racing is anything but predictable.
It
didn't take long before the first "event". In fact,
it was not even a lap before Terry Troxell and J.W. Myers motored
through the roostertail turn together. J.W. held a tight arc,
though leaving a lane. Troxell appeared to slide out through the
lane and caught a wall full of water, lifting the bright orange
hydro skyward and over. The safety crews hurried to the crash
and Terry was up and out in minutes without injury. Equally as
fortunate was the U-16 hull, as it received mostly superficial
damage. But, the U-16 had to work fast to get the damaged hull
ready for Heat 2.
Heat
1B found the U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto take the lead and was unchallenged
the rest of the way.
The
restart of Heat 1A saw J.W. Myers disqualified for a course infraction,
giving the heat to the Miss Budweiser and leaving the Llumar Window
Film hydro with a third place finish. According to the Hydro-Prop
web site, J.W. was awarded 23 points.
Heat
2A found the Budweiser out in front with Llumar chasing. However,
the Llumar slowed and came to a halt, allowing the Budweiser to
run away with the rest of the heat. Miss DYC/Dick Scott/Emcor
finished second and U-2 Miss Chrysler Jeep finished third.
The
crowd roared as Terry Troxell came on tho the race course with
a broken, but running, U-16 E-Lam Plus. Troxell seemed to
take the lead and have things under control, only to find out
that he and Steve David in the Oberto had jumped the gun. That
left the heat win to U-100 Al Deeby Dodge, with Greg Hopp driving.
Ken Muscatel in the Miss Bell Fork Lift finished second.
